Born and raised by two musicians in Stockholm, Sweden, Joel quickly got in touch with his musicality. He studied for 6 years at Adolf Fredriks Musikklasser, a famous elementary school with a choir-profile. There he got his musical foundation in terms of music theory and reading music as well as ear training. Through that school he got two soloist roles on the Royal Opera as a boy soprano at the age of 11. That same year he started to play the bass, borrowed from his father, a respected bassist in Sweden.
After being self-taught he continued his studies at Södra Latins Gymnasium, at one of swedens most competetive music-programme and arguable the best jazz education in Sweden at high school level. During his first year at the school, he also got to play with Stockholm Youth Big Band, an elite big band run by Stockholm County, in which he played with for 2 years.
During the summer of 2015 he was a ”summer musician” at The Stockholm Royal Concert Hall with his jazz quintet ”a:gri”. They played approximately 50 short concerts in the foyer, gaining experience of being on stage as well as gaining a broader repertoire as well as writing own songs. During that same year, Joel formed a pop group called Full Fleece which he wrote songs, recorded an EP and an album as well as playing on local venues. Joels ability to play in different styles and different instruments has allowed him to play in pop-groups, both on electric bass and synth bass as well as in big bands.
Being raised by jazz musicians, studied classical choir singing whilst also being interested in electronic music, Joels sound is best described as being melodic, playfully simple while also harmonically developed and keeping a groove, mainly on electric bass but also on double bass, as well as the synthesizer. Joels versatility and strong identity is what truly makes him the bassist that he is.
